HomeMy WebLinkAbout10-11-1994 Library Board MinutesOctober 11, 1994 4 pm Unger Memorial Library Advisory Board met in the basement of the Library with Geoff Wells, President of the Board and Board members Rita Cronholm and Albert Torres present. Also attending were Muff London, director of Community Development for the City of Plainview, Ruth Gooch, UML Friends president, Minnie Ruth Rigler, Literacy coordinator, Lucile Davis, WTLS lay representative and John Sigwald, Librarian. John discussed out -of -county charge for Library cards - possibly for PR purposes should have no fee. Money for Library budget comes from General Fund of City which includes property and sales tax moneys. Muff and John will check on percentages and discussion will continue next month. Rita Cronholm made the motion that a $5. fee be charged initially with no renewal fee for out -of -county cards. Motion was tabled. John announced that blood drives will be back at UML - no exact date known just now. Girl Scout display in cases this month . Minga Rodriguez arranged for this display. John has been nominated as President of the Small and Medium -Sized Library Section of the Public Library Association. Election will take place at next year's ALA meeting in Philadelphia. Make a Difference Day is October 22. UML will have a fine -free day on the 22nd for books returned that day . Also Friends of UML is requesting book donation for next March's Book Sale. John discussed Library vandalism. It is mostly property damage. Last week several teenage boys were throwing rocks just outside the front door. They ran when confronted by John. Police were called but boys were gone when police arrived. Muff said staff should always call Police at 111 when anything at all happens. John told of several other vandalism instances -- one key was taken from computer keyboard in Reference section, tables are continually being written on. Muff suggested having people come in at peak times of use and watch for vandalism. She said possibly this could be a project for the Junior Crime -Watchers. John told of bids that were made for painting interior of UML_ Nothing on this so far. John would prefer to do painting and carpet at one time, possibly waiting and proposing this as capital improvement next fiscal year. Junior Service League donated an opaque project to UML. It is located in the basement meeting room. John showed those present examples of library projects. All Juvenile books have been relabeled. Ongoing Genealogy and Adult Non-fiction projects were also shown. John explained about the Accelerated Reader List which is completed and is being used in conjunction the Plainview ISD in that program. Meeting was adjourned.
