HomeMy WebLinkAbout09-13-1994 Library Board MinutesSeptember 13, 1994 4pm Unger Memorial Library Advisory Board met in the basement of the Library with Geoff Wells, President of the Board, Pat Kelly, Treva James, and Rita Cronholm members of the Board attending. Also attending were Muff London, director of Community Development for the City of Plainview, Ruth Gooch, president of Friends of UML, Lucile Davis, WTLS lay representative, Irene Favila City Council liaison, and John Sigwald, Librarian of UML. Introductions were made as Irene Favila is the new Council liaison. John explained that Board meetings are held September through May on the 2nd Tuesday at 4 pm. Notification will be made each month to all involved about a week ahead. Geoff asked for an agenda with letter if possible. John told about this month's UML display -- ALA Banned Books -- It is focusing on anti -censorship being our goal. Censorship comes from all sides --someone can find something objectionable in anything. As a public library we try to show various sides and have things for everyone. Hope Jimenez, long-time UML employee left in May. Her replacement is Nena Montelongo. She is bilingual for patrons who need that service. Hale COunty Literacy is in its last year of grants. This next year the City has budgeted $5000. for salary in that program and another $9000. is to come from the United Way. John hope to restart the Newsletter as soon as possible. John told of his trip to ALA in Miami in June. He made this trip at his own expense. He serves on the Children's Notable Recordings Committee. He attended the Caldecott/ Newbery Award dinner with author Laurence Yep. Approx. 15,000 normally attend the ALA Annual conference. UML budget is essentially the same as last year. On paper, it appears to be more because the Literacy salary and money to be re-imbursed for Literacy program from United Way is included this year. We did receive $500. additional in Books for 1994-95. UML collection is approx. 40-45,000 titles. It is a dynamic collection - we withdraw materials as needed to continue to put new ones on the shelves. Materials not in our collection can be obtained through Interlibrary Loan - we have about 500 requests per year for ILL. Travel and expense is to be cut. TLA will be held in 1995 in Dallas. John said he would like to be able to help staff members of UML go is possible. TLA and ALA give library staff and the Librarian a chance to broaden scope, see people we deal with, etc. John talked about the PISD Accelerated Reading list and showed those present the list we are preparing showing what books UML has that are on the list and what school(s) have the tests for those books. Meeting was adjourned.
