Unger Memorial Library Advisory Board meeting was held in the basement
meeting room at the Library. Those present were: Muff London, director
of Community Development for the City of Plainview ; Ruth Gooch, president
of Friends of UML; Lucile Davis, lay representative to WTLS, and board
members Treva James, Pat Kelly, Rita Cronholm and Albert Torres.
Also present was John Sigwald, Librarian of UML.
Geoff Wells was unable to be present so the meeting was called to order by
John Sigwald.
John told about Texas Library Association in Corpus Christi that was held in
April, He.and Sue Roth both attended. It was a very good conference and new
ideas and attitudes were observed.
American Library Association is in Miami, FL in June, 1994. John will attend.
Most of the expense will be his own as he has already used the budgeted amt.
for this year. Muff London stated that she wished she could change this, but
people above here are determined to adhere strictly to the budgeted amounts.
John announced that Hope Jimenez has resigned and will be leaving right away.
Also, Minnie Ruth Rigler will be leaving the position of coordinator of the
Literacy Program on 9/30/94 and a replacement will be hired in the future
for a 20 hour position for that job.
John told the Board about our new version of computer software and stated
that things for the most part are coming along quite well.
More vandalism and theft has occurred recently at the Library. Muff stated
that City policy now is that graffiti is to be cleaned off as soon as it is
found. She also stated that Library staff should not be involved with individuals
stealing or vandalizing in the Library. She stated that the police should be
called and individual turned over to them.
John stated that next year's budget was submitted recently. It includes
requests for additional funds for books and transportation as well as
other things.
Junior Service League is going to buy an opaque projector for use in the
Basement Meeting Room.
John stated that another application for a grant from the Mayer Foundation
has been made. This would be for juvenile video sets.
There will be no Board meetings in the summer. The next meeting will be
the second MOnday in September 1994.
Before adjourning, John handed out copies of a Parade article by John Jakes--
"Libraries are not Frills."
