HomeMy WebLinkAbout09-14-1993 Library Board MinutesSeptember 14, 1993 4 p.m. UML Advisory Board meeting was attended by board members: Geoff Wells, Pat Kelly, Albert Torres, Treva James and Rita Cronholm. Also attending were : Muff London, Director of Commnnity Development for the City of Plainview ; Ruth Gooch, president of Friends of UML ; Donna Sarchet, past president of Hi -Plains Genealogical Society; Mary Virginia Kirchhoff, City Council liaison; Lucile Davis, WTLS lay representative and John Sigwald, Librarian. John introduced all present and welcomed Muff London as the new Directory of Community Development and his immediate supervisor. John told the Board about his attending ALA Convention in New Orleans in June, 1993. He explained that attending the yearly convention allows him to meet vendors, authors, publishers, etc. He made a presentation at this year's convention for the Notable Recordings Committee of which he is a member. Next year's convention will be held in Miami, FL. John told the Board about the new fiscal year starting October 1. Items discussed at the April meeting as priorities that have been approved are : Upgrading computer for catalog, $5000. for City portion of funding Literacy coordinator position and an additional $2000. for books. John told the Board that Lexan (storm) windows have been installed on the east and south sides of the Library hoping to stop the chronic vandalism. He did tell also that just after these were installed, a large window next to the front door was broken (hole). Replacement of this was about $300. John told those present about the Mayer Foundation grant to the Friends of UML for the Electronic Information Center in the Reference area. The Board agreed that meetings will be held monthly during the school year and will not be held during June, July and August. Some library policies were discussed - John is working on a Policy Manual. The $10. out -of -county fee for library cards has been effect for some time and all cards are being mailed. All present went upstairs to Reference area and John showed them the EIC and its capabilities. At this time programs on the system are: San Diego Zoo, Monarch Notes, Periodical Abstracts, and Toolworks Encyclopedia (same as paper copy Academic American). John explained that he would like for this area to be for persons Junior High age and older. He gave everyone a demonstration of "Just Grandma and Me" to show capabilities of the system (Sound, video, etc.). Meeting was adjourned.
