UML Advisory Board meeting was attended by Albert Torres, Geoff Wells,
and Rita Cronholm, board members; Friends of UML president Ruth Gooch;
WTLS lay rep. Lucile Davis; Diane Groh, Community Services Director for the
City of Plainview; and John Sigwald, Librarian.
John gave a report on the WTLS meeting that he and Lucile attended today
at Levelland. Discussions were held at this meeting about System
budgeting of its money in the future. The possibility of establishing
a Union Catalog of area libraries was discussed. At the present time,
there is a phone line to obtain LCCL holdings, but it is a long-
distance call at this time. Hopefully an 800 number can be established
in the future. Also the possibility of using CD's so that each library
in the system could have access to the holdings of all System libraries.
Unger receives approximately $5-6,000. yearly for development funds
which we use for books presently. Also, Unger staff members attend
workshops presented by both the WTLS in Lubbock and Panhandle System
in Amarillo.
John gave a report on his recent trip to ALA Mid -winter conference in
Denver. He serves on the Notable Children's recordings committee. Also
at the meeting each year the Caldecott and Newbery winners are announced.
John also sat on a pilot program committee of Follett Software users.
There were 8 people on this committee --6 school librarians and 2 public
librarians. Follett Software gave the library (John) the video "Mind's
Treasure Chest" which is about how to use library. This is a very
good video and shows the people using the same materials and software,
etc. that we have here at Unger.
Diane told us that there will be an Elevator Bid Conference meeting this
Friday.
Advertising for bids for the elevator should go out next week. Bids should
be let at the the 2nd City Countil meeting in March.
John told those present that vandalism continues at the library.
Texas Library Association conference will be held March 9-13 at San
Antonio. John and Sue Roth plan to attend.
Due to TLA meeting, there will be no Library Board meeting in
March. Will meet again in April.
