Members present were : Geoff Wells, Albert Torres, and Treva James. Also present were WTLS lay representative Lucile Davis and City Council liason Mary Kirchoff. Diane Groh , Director of Community Services and Wally Hatch, City Attorney also attended . John welcomed everyone and introduced them. After discussion, it was agreed that the Introduction to the Policy Manual (introduced at last monthly meeting) is acceptable as it is written. Some members had questioned wording of the Mission Statement as introduced in Sept. Mary Virginia Kirchoff had asked Wally hatch, city attorney, to obtain mission statements from other libraries. Those were varied, according to Wally. He brought copies of the Lubbock and Amarillo mission statement for each of the Board members. Geoff and Mary Va. both expressed the opinion that the 2nd paragraph of Lubbock's statement was good. John is to re -write the Mission Statement for UML. The new portion of the Policy Manual will be mailed to members one (1) week prior to the meeting so that it may be discussed and voted on at the next meeting. John said that anyone on Board with policy ideas should either write them up in draft form and give to John, the Board can then discuss and make decisions. Wally Hatch stated that according to the City Charter the Board has official authority to make library policies. John told the Board about the table donated by Crafts, Etc. which is now being used in the Storytime area. Parks Dept. employees helped to move this upstairs. Additional computers now in adult and juvenile section. Electrical work has been dome. We now have six (6) computers available to the public. More people are using the computers and also the computer for periodical indexing. John pointed out the Banned Books display which the Library has in cooperation with Hastings --this is to raise public awareness of what happens when books are challenged. John told the Board that UML tries to get as many types of books as possible. If someone requested a book, if possible it will be ordered. UML is the first library in the WTLS to have automated circulation and catalogs. Both are very well received and doing great. Cataloging is about 3/4 completed at this time. Genealogy assn. has their own computer and programs that they have purchased. Many people come from other towns to make use of our genealogy and local history collection. the Literacy Center is nearly finished. Mary Virginia asked that a letter of Thanks from the Board be available at the nexttBoard meeting to be sighed and sent to Volunteers who made the Center possible. Meeting was adjourned.
