Members present were: Geoff Wells, Albert Torres, Treva'James, and Rita Cronholm. Also present were Friends of UML president Ruth Gooch, City Council liason Mary Kirchoff. John told the Board about the Soroptomist Club donation for Japanese craftsmen books and videos. John showed Board members quilts hanging during May courtesy of Creative Quilters and mermaid, owls and other sculpture given by Candace Keller of Wayland to be displayed at the library. Billie Jameson was involved with getting the sculptures donated. John showed book vandalism. Told how books are checked out to "Lost Books" if staff cannot find them readily so that at a later date if still not found, they may be withdrawn and/or replaced. John told the Board that he is still looking for alternative methods of funding the Literacy position. Grant that we have is not permanent. The county will fund 1/3 of the cost which leaves 2/3 of funding to obtain. The Board agreed not to have summer meetings unless a called meeting is necessary. Meetings will resume in September, 1992. Library policy of requiring Texas drivers license or ID from DPS and mailing cards was discussed. Mary Kirchoff asked that all try to think of any possibilities of changes that might explain policy more fully to potential patrons so that no one would feel not welcome at the library. Other Board members indicated that they were happy with present policy. This discussion was precipitated by an unhappy patron who went to the City Manager, 5/12/92 after being unable to get a card immediately on 5/11/92. Friends of UML magazine sale rack is now in the hall. John told the Board that he will be attending the annual ALA convention in San Francisco in June. John told the Board that we are getting started on the project of cataloging for the additional 20,000 titles in the computer that presently do not have complete cataloging. There have been no complaints regarding the out -of -county fee increase that was put into effect in April, 1992. John asked Board to notice the new section of the front desk that has finally arrived. Meeting was adjourned. Respectfully submitted, Sue Roth
