Others present included John Kirkhoff, serving as Library Board Liason person to the Plainview City Council, Mike McDonough, Plainview Director of Miniciple Services, and Billie Jameson, representing the Friends of the Library organization. The first order of business was a challenge of the book The Satanic Bible . This challenge was submitted by Randall Newton. The Library Collection Policy was discussed. The Library Bill of Rights was explained by John. John feels that if we have material in the library, it should not be restricted to the public. Mike McDonough reported that this book has surfaced several times at the 5th grade learning center, and that his office was receiving telephone calls from persons objecting to the book. The board has, in the past, addressed the problem of challenged books by reshelving a book in order to restrict circulation. Susan Wilson made a motion to reshelve The Satanic Bible into the reference section, so the book could still be accessible, but would not circulate outside the library. Discussion followed. The motion was seconded by Jeff Wells, and the motion'passed. The book will be reshelved. John brought up the matter of persons returning badly damaged books to the library, and stated that we need to consider making a policy to give him the authority to recall library cards from patrons who are returning damaged books. The meeting was adjourned at 5:25 by librian John Sigwald. Susan Wilson, Secretary
