Discussion focused on potentially controversial books --primarily books on sex education --and whether they should be placed in the adult or juvenile collections when they were written specifically for children. Sigwald indicated the need for a COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT POLICY which the board would endorse and support should challenges to materials in the collection occur. Linda Terrell, Sherry Akin, and Marka White said they though the book Where Do Babies Come From should be in the guidance section for adults. Discussion followed. It was decided by the board that these materials would be shelved in the adult collection, with catalog cards being placed in both the adult and juvenile collections. Also, the subject heading GUIDANCE MATERIALS followed by the appropriate subdivision would be used with these items. The above would be integrated into the collection development policy which all board members agreed to sign. Bobby James told the board to go ahead and select a new board member to replace Rob Strong who has left Plainview. Suggestions for a replacement should be presented to city council. Mr. Sigwald discussed the board's approval of the use of the Friends of the Library funds for the library. He told the board that the library needed a correcting selectric (this one!) and four units of shelving and that no capital had been approved for the library's budget for fiscal year 84-85. Marka White moved that the board approve this purchase. Sherry Akin seconded the motion. Motion carried. Bobby James said the library budget was approved as submitted with the.exception of capital expenditures which were all cut. Sigwald indicated that there would be a display of books which had been challenged in school and public libraries during Banned Books Week, September 8-15, 1984.
