4/2/84
The following persons attended the library board meeting:
Linda Terrell
Sherry Akin
Marka White
Shirley Igo --lay representative
Norman Huggins --director of finance
Bobby James --city council liaison
Toney Lynch --secretary
John Sigwald--librarian
Mr. Sigwald asked about the deadline for the new budget. Mr. Huggins replied
that he would be receiving forms for budget requests by the first of May.
Discussion followed.
Mr. Sigwald told the board that some members of the Junior Service League
had come by to offer their services to help the library out. Mr. Huggins
noted that the budget for the coming year would be very tight.
The recent book sale was discussed briefly.
Mr. Sigwald discussed the possibility of having a fine -free day in the library
in order to get books returned to the library. This could }possibly be held in
connection with National Library Week.
Mr. Sigwald told those present that he had been certified to handle voter
registration forms through the library. He also explained that he wanted to
get a slide program instigated that would show how to correctly use the
public library. He told the board members that he would be working on the
summer reading program from now until summer. He enlightened the group
on the workshop in Odessa that he and Hope Jimenez attended in relation to
children's reading programs. He explained that he wanted to encourage
"quality" reading" as opposed to "quantity" reading.
Shirley Igo discussed the West Texas Library System with the group present.
Mr. Sigwald encourage anyone who could go to be sure to plan to attend the
American Library Association meeting in Dallas in June.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT ON LIBRARY ACTIVITIES
4/2/84
The (annual) book sale was held on Friday, March 2, and Saturday, March 3.
With excellent volunteer help (in the form of a revived friends of the library
group) we raised about $1,100. This money was deposited into the library's
Gifts and Memorials account. Next year I think one day will suffice.
Audrene Robison, the former treasurer of the friends group, brought me a
check for the library for $556.96 from the old friends' group's checking
account. The money has also been deposited into the library's Gifts and
Memorials account bringing our balance to something over $2,000. Not
elevator material yet. But it's a start.
The genealogy department is now located in the south half of the balcony.
The response from them has been very good --also, quite a few genealogy volunteers
helped with the book sale. Paul Evans, a volunteer who is a retired mechanical
engineer, did most of the work disassembling adult fiction shelving and
reassembling it in the balcony for genealogy. He has also done innumerable
special projects for the library and is already the library's "volunteer
of the year".
Our cassette/filmstrip listening/viewing area is taking shape. We have
purchased an additional filmstrip viewer. Both book/cassette and filmstrip/
cassette collections will be expanded if they prove to be popular. We do
also have a few adult filmstrips. Most of the adult book/cassettes are
language courses, including the new Foreign Service language programs.
Most of the physical moving of the collection has been completed. As soon
as the next fiscal year rolls around some more shelving will be purchased
to allow the adult non-fiction collection some breathing room; also, some of
the juvenile shelving needs to be replaced with lower shelves so the shorter
folks can reach the materials without literally climbing the walls.
Weeding of the collection is progressing --so is the reclassification project.
National Library Week is April 8-14. I am going to try a "fine -free week"
that week as an experiment. There will be an article in the Herald on
Sunday, April 8, and announcements on the local radio stations during that
week. Also, I will be writing an article on the library for the Herald which
will appear in the paper that week.
With the friends meeting in February, we have revived interest in volunteer
help. I now have a growing friends file. The first project was, of course,
the book sale. I intend, however, to try to make full use of volunteers in
library activities--e.g., summer reading club, typing, shelving, etc.
Hale County residents may now register to vote at the library. I talked
to Christine Vinson at the tax assessor's office a few weeks ago and was
deputized --which means I can distribute voter registration forms and change
of address (name, etc.) forms and can help those who need it fill out the
forms.
