1' 1/9/84
The following persons attended the library board meeting:
Linda Terrell
Sherry Akin
Rob Strong
Marka White
Susan Wilson
John Hatchel--city manager
Norman Huggins --director of finance
Bobby James --city council liaison
Toney Lynch --secretary
John Sigwald--librarian
The librarian brought the board up to date on changes and activities in the
library since the last board meeting. Topics discussed were signs, filmstrips,
bulletin boards and various changes within the library, including plans to move
the genealogy department upstairs. He also discussed criteria for belonging to
the West Texas Library System. He said the board needed a lay representative
to the WTLS. John Hatchel told them that the representative did not have to
be a member of the board. Sunny Coffey or Shirley Igo were suggested as good
prospects for this.
The librarian suggested that board members and other interested persons should
join the Texas Library Association (TLA) and the American Library Association
(ALA); information on these organizations will be sent to the board members.
The possibility of having a fine -free day to help recover long overdue materials
was discussed (probably will be during National Library Week --April 8-14).
Also, suggestions for library week activities were proposed.
Generalities of the library budget were discussed.
John Hatchel expressed his appreciation to the library board members for their
dedication and willingness to serve.
John Sigwald, librarian
Toney Lynch, secretary
DIRECTOR'S REPORT ON LIBRARY ACTIVITIES
January 9, 1984
The periodicals room has been completely weeded --most of our periodicals
are now only being kept for five years. Old periodicals will be sold in
the forthcoming book sale --hopefully before the end of February.
Thirty new book/cassettes have been added to the collection. Filmstrip/
cassettes are now being cataloged and shelved next to the book/cassettes
in the children's picture book area. A filmstrip/cassette and book/cassette
viewing and listening area has been established next to these materials.
Another filmstrip viewer has been ordered. Book/cassettes are available
for circulation; filmstrip/cassettes are not.
Our annual report to be returned to the Texas State Library to meet
system membership requirements has been completed. Because of heavy
weeding and reclassification our current statistics gathering methods
will be revamped following an accurate inventory --this will occur one
step at a time as sections of the collection are completed.
The genealogy move is imminent! As soon as our shelving is assembled we
will switch out the first two rows of adult fiction shelving and move
that shelving upstairs for genealogy. Periodicals will be moved to genealogy's
old location and the old genealogy room will be used for housing and viewing
periodicals on microform.
We've purchased new signs for the library to help define major collections
and to direct patrons to information.
Bulletin boards are now being used for the following information:
COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES
MISC. INFORMATION
LIBRARY ACTIVIES
NEW ITEMS IN THE LIBRARY
On January we (my wife and I) went to Plains for an auction which included
library furniture. We obtained some double-faced wood shelving for the
juvenile area.
In the future I will try to have these director's reports completed to
be mailed with the letters announcing the quarterly board meetings so
that you may review them prior to the meeting.
We need a lay representative to the West Texas Library System. Anyone
interested?
