HomeMy WebLinkAbout05-01-1978 Library Board MinutesUNGER MEMORIAL LIBRARY ADVISORY COMMITTEE May 1, 1978 The regular meeting of the Unger Memorial Library Advisory Committee was called to order at 7:10 P.M., Monday, May 1, 1978, by Mrs. Merwyn Igo, President. Present were Ruby Curry, Susan LaFont, Malcolm Tisdel, David Willson, Lloyd Woods, Norman Huggins, and Judy Smith, Librarian. Press representatives present were Chuck Martin, Charles Bechtold, Doug McDonough, Jim•Davis, and Shari Campbell. Other visitors pres- ent were Deborah Canterbury, Jayme Skelton, Mr. $ Mrs. Weldon Menzer, Mrs. James Whitfill, Dorothy Brown, Lois Reeves, Cheryl Cornelius, Sandra Hofsommer, Fred Gant, Mrs. Gerald Martin, Weldon Gregg, Jane Strong, Jane Leskin Walston, David E. Walston, Mrs. M. K. Parker, Mrs. Robert Tipton, Mrs. Robert Schoppa, Don Louis, Terry Ulmer, Suzanne Stovall, Sharon Morgan, Richard E. Morgan, Judy Strickland, David Howard, Robbie Crawford, Arlene Lorenz, Elfride Bontke, and Dr. $ Mrs. Donald Moore. The minutes of the April 3, 1978, meeting were approved as presented. The Librarian's Report for April was presented. Four items of correspondence were received for filing. The Committee considered the six Request for Reconsideration of Library Materials forms which had been filed by Mrs. Gerald Martin on April 3, 1978. Prior to action on the complaints, Mr. Huggins read a statement of policy at the request of Mayor J. Robert Wayland. Mrs. Igo read the Library's Materials Selection Policy and the Amendment adopted on January 9, 1978. Mrs. Igo stated that the Committee's only options were to leave the books on the open shelves or restrict access to the books. Mrs. Igo ascertained that each Committee,member had read each book. Our Bodies, Ourselves was left on the open shelves with Mrs. Curry, Mrs. LaFont, and Mrs. Igo voting to keep the book on the open shelves; Mr. Tisdel and Mr. Willson voted to restrict access. More Joy was left on the open shelves with Mrs. Curry, Mrs. LaFont, and Mr. Willson voting to leave it on the open shelves: Mr. Tisdel voted to restrict access. For Better, For Worse was left on the open shelves with Mrs. Curry, Mrs. LaFont, and Mr. Tisdel voting to leave the book on the open shelves: Mr. Willson voted for re- stricted access. Gay was left on the open -shelves with Mrs. Curry, Mrs. LaFont, and Mrs. Igo voting to leave the book on the open shelves; Mr. Tisdel and Mr. Willson voted to restrict access. Wake up in Bed Together was placed on restricted access with Mrs. Curry, Mr. Tisdel, and Mr. Willson voting to restrict access; Mrs. LaFont voted to leave the book on the open shelves. The Redbook Report on Female Sexuality was left on the open shelves with Mrs. Curry, Mrs. LaFont,FMr. Tisdel, and Mr. Willson voting to keep the book on the open shelves. Mr. Tisdel moved and Mrs. LaFont seconded that the Committee approve Summer Hours for the Library. Motion passed. Summer Hours will be as follows from May 30, 1978, to September 2, 1978: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday - 9 A.M. - 9 P.M.; Wednesday, Friday - 9 A.M. - 6 P.M.; and, Saturday - 9 A.M. - 1 P.M. Mrs. LaFont moved and Mr. Tisdel seconded that the Committee request of the City Council that the 9th Street parking area be designated a No Parking Zone and that appropriate signs and markings be installed. Motion passed. Miss Smith will send a letter to the City Council Tuesday requesting the action be taken on the motion as soon as possible. Mrs. Curry moved and Mrs. LaFont seconded that the budget request be adopted as amended. Motion passed.
