HomeMy WebLinkAbout12-06-1976 Library Board MinutesUNGER MEI+ORIAL LIBRARY ADVISORY COMMITTEE December 6, 1976 The regular meeting of the Unger Memorial Library Advisory Committee was called to order by Mrs. Merwyn Igo, President, at 7:10 p. m., Monday, December 6, 1976, in the Librarian's office. Present were Ruby J Curry, Susan La Font, and Judy Smith, Librarian. The minutes of the November 1, 1976, meeting were approved as presented. The Librarian's report for November was presented. Miss Smith read letters from member of the Legialative Budget Board in response to the Committee's letter of November 5, 1976, requesting full funding for the Texas State Library's budget. Letters were received from the following members of the Legislative Budget Board: Rep. Bill Presnal; Rep. Joe Wyatt, Jr.; Rep. George Leland; Senator Pete Snelson; Lt. Governor, William P. Hobby; and, Speaker of the House, Bill Clayton. Mrs. Igo presented a library column from the newspaper in Kennedy, Texas. The possibility of having such a column in a local newspaper will be considered. Mrs. La Font will contact members of the Friends of the Library concerning their plans for 1977. Miss Smith presented copies of the materials selection policies of Unger Library and the Irving Public Library System for comparison. Some statements were added to Unger Library's policy. Miss Smith will have the amended policy prepared for approval at the January meeting. The Committee then discussed the problem of overdue books. The possibility of some type of legal action will be discussed at the January meeting. Miss Smith will ob- tain copies of the letters sent by the Amarillo Public Library and signed by the City Attorney. The Committee decided to set aside January 27, 28, and 29 as fine - free days in an attempt to recover materials. A table for overdue materials will be placed near the entrance, and no questions will be asked. The fine -free days will be advertised in the local newspaper and on the local radio stations. Forms will be sent to all patrons with long -overdue materials. Miss Smith stated that a gift of more than 80 books was being presented to the Library through the office of Thomas E. Joiner, an attorney in Atlanta, Georgia. Mr. Joiner has requested that the library sign a form granting him special Power of Attorney for this one transaction. Mr. Tisdel is studying the legality of the Committee's signing this form. A memorial book was selected for Hugh Tucker, Barbara's father, and will be in- cluded in the next book order.
