UNGER MEMORIAL LIBRARY ADVISORY COMMITTEE
The regular meeting of the Unger Memorial Library Advisory Committee
was called to order Monday, April 5, 1976, at 7:40 p.m., in the Librarian's
Office by Mrs. Merwyn Igo, President. Present were: Ruby Curry, Susan
LaFont, Malcolm Tisdel and Judy Smith, Librarian.
The minutes of the March 1, 1976, meeting were approved as presented.
The Librarian's report for March was presented. The Committee was pre-
sented with copies of the application for Systems membership for their in-
formation.
Miss Smith reported on National Library Week activities. News arti-
cles appeared in the Plainview Daily Herald and the Plainview Reporter News
Spot announcements about the three film showings have been submitted to the
local radio stations. Displays from the collections of Harold Gladman and
Roger Smith are on display, along with seven framed art reproductions from
the library's circulating collection. Film showings include Laurel and
Hardy films on Monday; Rudolph Valentino. on Thursday; and, children''s
films on Saturday.
Miss Smith reported that Mrs. Eddy (Dee Ann Curry) has been employed
to direct the County Outreach Program for the summer. Mrs. Curry has com-
pleted a week of planning for the program and has visited each of the three
libraries involved in the program. She has ordered films, all but one of
which are confirmed, for the program.
Miss Smith announced that the theme for the summer reading club will
be "The Star Spangled Banner." Each participant will receive a printed
flag on which he will glue a star for each book he has read. There will be
a party for all children who have completed the Reading Club. "Johnny
Tremain" has been reserved to show at the party.
The Committee discussed the need for a standard form to be used by
patrons who complain about having to pay prescribed library fines and da-
mage fees and abide by other library policies. A form will be devised for
complainant use and will then be reviewed by the committee. The complain-
ant will receive a reply from the committee.
The committee asked that a letter be drafted to school principals
asking for their cooperation in asking each teacher to please give at least
twenty-four hours notice before bringing classes to the library. This will
help the library staff to better serve the needs of the classes by allowing
time for rescheduling personnel if necessary and help avoid the possibility
of double scheduling. Their cooperation will also be asked in having the
library notified of major assignments in order that pertinent materials may
be placed on reserve so that they may be made readily available to all stu-
dents and not just the first few who come in to check out the materials.
The committee then discussed the proposed budget for 1976-1977. The
committee noted that the only requests for additional funds (those above
the necessary inflationary increases to provide services at their current
levels) are for personnel, equipment maintenance and printing. The severe
personnel shortage was discussed at some length and possible solutions ag-
reed upon. A letter will be forthcoming to the City Council delineating

the problem and offering the committee's recommendations for solving this
