HomeMy WebLinkAbout05-04-2013 Library Board MinutesLibrary Board Meeting May 14, 2013 Present were Board members Kevin Sweeney, Stephanie James, and Melissa Wilkinson. Also present was Genealogy President Linda Shipp. John Sigwald shared his experiences from the Texas Library Association Conference in Fort Worth in April. He gave a succinct overview of the meetings he attended and the information he garnered. In April the library's Interlibrary Loan program went from being a borrower -only policy to one of also being a lender within the OCLC system membership. John explained that with this added operation also comes additional incurred postage for mailing the books to the requesting libraries. The Board was reminded that sending faxes is now available for a fee. John informed the Board about a copyright situation dealing with the Hearst Corporation and the Plainview Herald (owned by the Hearst Corporation). Some of the microfilmed Heralds have been digitized at our cost. The digitized version of the Herald had been made available to the public online. The Hearst Corporation does not want the digitized version to be available to the public. It was John's decision to pull the public online access in deference to the Hearst Corporation's directives, but will continue with access to these records within the library. John would like to complete the digitization of the Plainview Herald in the 2013- 2014 fiscal year. The City has asked all departments to try to trim budgets by 5% for the new fiscal year. The library's sewage disposal line needs to be replaced. This project is being investigated. Summer Reading Club is in June. A schedule is due out soon. United Blood Services is having a blood drive at the library on Friday, May 24. The Board is still in need of another member. Suggestions may be given to John. The Centennial Celebration for Unger Memorial Library is still in the works for early fall, possibly September or October. The meeting was dismissed at 4:55 p.m.
