February 12, 2013
Board members present were President Kevin Sweeney, Vice -President Kenna Hatch
and Melissa Wilkinson. Also attending were Assistant City Manager Jeffrey Snyder and
Genealogy Society President Linda Shipp.
Some items that were mentioned were:
•Centennial celebration possibly next fall
• Future recovering of the roof with foam
•Cemetery records being updated with obituaries of Hale County residents
and pictures of headstones
• Digitizing of Plainview Herald microfilm to be put online for public use.
Completed now are 1996-2007. John mentioned to Jeffrey Snyder that the
completion of this project would cost an estimated $25,000.
John provided each of the board members a copy of TLA's Public Library Board
Handbook (2012).
John reviewed the updates made in the Board policies. Many of them had not been
revised for several years. He also brought to the Board's attention the new policies
which were put into place under the umbrella of formerly adopted policies (i.e. faxing
now available as a public service for a charge; patron's no longer charged for copies of
job applications or resumes).
Newest addition to the policy was the use of Kindles with eBooks for checkout. Needed
was feedback from the Board as to whether or not to set limits on lending these
eReaders only to patrons with proven records of borrowing or allow them to be borrowed
by anyone with a card. Melissa suggested limits be set to allow patrons with proven
records first, then slowly expand to include others if it seems to be working out with no
problems. Kevin recommended that the limits be set by Librarian John Sigwald for the
time being. Then use garnered information that becomes available to set and adopt
policy in the future.
The policies were accepted as written with Kevin Sweeney making the motion to accept,
Kenna Hatch seconding, and Melissa Wilkinson stating she was in agreement for
accepting the policies as presented.
John informed the Board that Board member David Barrett would be resigning his
position and written notification should be received in the near future. John asked those
present if they knew of anyone who might be interested in filling the vacated position.
Kevin suggested Leslie Delgado, a choir teacher at Coronado Middle School.
John mentioned the TLA conference was in Fort Worth in April this year. If anyone is
interested in attending, the library (City) would pay the membership fee.
John reminded the Board that the Friends of UML Book Sale was coming up in March.
The next meeting will be May 14, 2013.
Meeting was dismissed at 4:55 pm.
