HomeMy WebLinkAbout12-14-2004 Library Board MinutesDecember 14, 2004 4:00 pm Unger Memorial Library Advisory Board met in the basement meeting room with the following in attendance: President David Isaacson, Members Kathy Azua and Sharon Morgan ; WTLS lay representative Lucile Davis and Librarian John Sigwald. President David Isaacson called the meeting to order. John talked about the library's growing dvd collection. Discussion regarding charges to patrons for lost or damaged materials ensued. Decision of the board was to charge retail (publisher's price) plus a flat $5. processing for all such materials. Members of the Board suggested an amnesty (fine -free) week in January. John will check with City Hall and if approved such a week will be held. John is still working with Surpass - UML's new software program for circulation and catalog. He is currently working on shelf list. John explained the "Cutter" table—numbers are decimals with "invisible" decimal point. "Nothing is something." John is going to ALA Midwinter meeting in Boston in January. He is on a Committee for Selected DVD and videos for Young Adults. John will be applying for a Texas Book Festival grant. This grant will be for books in series - to fill in gaps in series we have. John talked about the Texas Public Library Standards summary. These were written by a committee including librarians from across Texas setting levels of Basic, Enhanced and Comprehensive. Libraries must meet some Basic to receive membership in, Texas State. Library area systems. Advantages of this membership are money (UML uses for books), workshops for education and staff development, etc. John stated he wants UML to be higher than BASIC if possible. He will talk more about this as the next meeting. John brought two New York Times articles regarding Ebooks in New York Public Library and Google working with libraries. He is putting this (eBooks) on hold at UML for the present. Meeting was adjourned.
