John talked about the library's growing dvd collection. Discussion
regarding charges to patrons for lost or damaged materials ensued.
Decision of the board was to charge retail (publisher's price) plus a flat
$5. processing for all such materials. Members of the Board suggested
an amnesty (fine -free) week in January. John will check with City Hall
and if approved such a week will be held.
John is still working with Surpass - UML's new software program for
circulation and catalog. He is currently working on shelf list. John
explained the "Cutter" table—numbers are decimals with "invisible"
decimal point. "Nothing is something."
John is going to ALA Midwinter meeting in Boston in January. He is on
a Committee for Selected DVD and videos for Young Adults.
John will be applying for a Texas Book Festival grant. This grant will
be for books in series - to fill in gaps in series we have.
John talked about the Texas Public Library Standards summary. These
were written by a committee including librarians from across Texas
setting levels of Basic, Enhanced and Comprehensive. Libraries must
meet some Basic to receive membership in, Texas State. Library area
systems. Advantages of this membership are money (UML uses for
books), workshops for education and staff development, etc. John
stated he wants UML to be higher than BASIC if possible. He will talk
more about this as the next meeting.
John brought two New York Times articles regarding Ebooks in New
York Public Library and Google working with libraries. He is putting
this (eBooks) on hold at UML for the present.
