HomeMy WebLinkAbout09-14-2004 Library Board MinutesSeptember 14, 2004 5 pm Unger Library Advisory Board met in the basement meeting room. Those in attendance were: President David Isaacson, Members Caroline Kopp, Kathy Azua and Hayley Cox, WTLS lay representative Lucile Davis and Librarian John Sigwald. John told about ALA convention in Orlando, FL in June 2004. John attended a pre -conference on Library of Congress subject headings. There were a variety of good speakers. Richard Clark was primary speaker—talked about USA Patriot Act. The government wants to know what people are checking out. ALA is opposed. UML has removed that log information from our current computer software. Confidentiality is very important. John felt the conference was very productive. He talked with a vendor of new software for circulation and catalog—Surpass. This is a smaller company from Georgia. John plans to order this new software for UML October 1, 2004 using Loan Star Grant funds (approx. $3500.) that have been pre -approved for this purchase. The full cost will be approx. $5000. initially and $1000. annually for tech support and $200. for dust jacket covers and book reviews. John discussed the current procedure for checking out dvd and videos— circulation period for 2 days and $1. per day fines. Teachers (and home- schoolers) have been allowed to check out educational material for one week. After discussion, David Isaacson recommended changing the policy. Caroline Kopp made the motion that all videos (and dvds) be 1 week checkout with fine of $1. per day overdue. Hayley Cox seconded the motion. The motion passed by acclamation. Review of collection development policy—this is left to the librarian's discretion. John showed a letter from a patron asking that UML purchase materials on creationism. John said the line between science or religion on this subject is very blurred. He explained that the library does not normally buy textbooks. UML will not buy these materials, but will suggest she check with PCA, WBU or we can try Interlibrary Loan for her. John will advise patron she may present this to the Board at next meeting if she cares to. John said that UML has had donations of religious materials. If a person wants to donate materials, they will probably be placed in collection. President David Isaacson said the Board will revisit the policy in about one year. Not much has changed. Policy to leave computers unfiltered is still in place. Caroline Kopp moved that policy be left in place. Hayley Cox seconded the motion. Motion passed by acclamation. Meeting was adjourned.
