Called meeting of the Unger Memorial Library Advisory Board met in the upstairs
Genealogy area of the Library. Present were: Board members David Isaacson, Caroline
Kopp and Sharon Morgan; HCLC coordinator Phyllis Wall and Librarian John Sigwald.
John explained to those present that he had called this special meeting regarding the
recent Supreme Court decision linking federal funds to public libraries to Internet
filtering. John explained his viewpoint of giving up the approx. $1200. (e -Rate discount
on Internet provider cost) UML receives yearly and continue Internet service to patrons
with our current (human monitoring) system. This was discussed and Board Members
agreed unanimously to forego funds at this time rather than install filtering software.
Two Board members were unable to attend this meeting. Board member Barbara Green
contacted by phone this date stated she "totally agrees" with this decision. Wednesday,
June 25, 2003, Board member Maisie Jones while in the Library stated she "definitely
agrees" with this decision. This makes the decision unanimous with the UML Advisory
Board.
John Sigwald is to write this decision and after speaking with Community Services
Director John Castro and City Attorney Wally Hatch will release to newspaper.
Meeting was adjourned.
