Unger Memorial Library Advisory Board met in the balcony pre-school
storytime area with the following attending: Board members David
Isaacson, Maisie Jones, Barbara Green, Caroline Kopp, and Sharon
Morgan; Hi -Plains Genealogy Society President Linda Reed; Hale County
Literacy coordinator Phyllis Wall; Director of Community Development
John Castro and Librarian John Sigwald.
John attended a Texas Library Association Texas Summer Reading Club
committee meeting in Austin on Friday, November 10. This is his first year
on this committee which establishing themes for future Summer Reading
Clubs sponsored by the TLA each year. They are presently working on
2003.
John attended Gates Foundation post -grant workshops in Lubbock
November 13 and 14. We received four computers with Gates Grant
funds; one of those is Spanish language. John indicated the library will

John introduced Phyllis Wall. She is the new Hale County literacy
coordinator. She has several on-going programs—Read 1st with First
Baptist Church weekly on Tuesdays for first -graders; Third Thursday—
first of this year will be held November 16. Also, Hale County Junior
Literacy Council members will be helping with future one-on-one Internet
tutoring.
John discussed UML 1999-2000 budget. The budget is approx. $250,000.
1999-00, an overage of approx. $50,000 was due to grant monies (Gates
and TIF). Overall the library was about $3000. under budget.
2000-01 FY budget includes $10,000 to have the concrete around the
outside of the building redone.
John told everyone that the computers here are unique to Unger. With the
two grants in excess of $50,000 we have available 10 computers with
Internet and Microsoft programs (Word, Excel, etc.) He explained that
resumes can be done with Resume Wizard in Word and are just fill in the
blank and can then be printed on our black&white laser printer for 10
cents. We also have available a network color laser printer that was
purchased with leftover Gates Grant funds.
Blood Drive will be held at the Library on Wednesday, November 22 from 9
to 6.
John took all interested to see the new computer area.
