HomeMy WebLinkAbout09-12-2000 Library Board MinutesSeptember 12, 2000 4 pm Unger Memorial Library Advisory Board met in the basement of the Library withe the following in attendance: Board members Maisie Jones, Sharon Morgan and Barbara Green; Friends of UML President Minnie Ruth Rigler; Hi -Plains Genealogy Society President Linda Reed; WTLS lay representative Lucile Davis, Director of Community Development John Castro and Librarian John Sigwald. John Sigwald welcomed new Board member Sharon Morgan who is taking the place of Joy Denton who recently moved to Amarillo. John gave Board members City of Plainview mugs. John told about CNN.Com--a half hour tv program --that did a program on former Plainview resident Jim Clark, co-founder of Netscape. The Library furnished high school annual pictures and other 1960's pictures of the city and was given credit on the national program. John reported on the TIF grant. 6 new public access Internet/Reference computers are in place. They have Microsoft Word --a word processing program --and patrons can bring (or purchase for $1) diskettes and save their data now. Patrons cannot write to hard drive and we have virus protection programs. Four additional (identical) computers will be coming in early October furnished by the Gates Foundation. John will be looking into eRate--a discounted communications rate that the library will be eligible for after the first year of TIF grant. Unger Library with other local groups (PISD, Wayland, Covenant Hospital, SPHO) has received a $500,000. TIF Community Grant. The City will be responsible for 1/6 of $50,000. The Library should receive a video projector and teleconferencing equipment that will make our meeting room one of the best locally. John reported that "hooey" (the library's cattle drive cow) will be staying here. Donations were made by David Isaacson (Burger King), Caroline & Dr. Doug Kopp, Phil and Nancy Cox, David Milstead (Milstead Hardware and Welding Supply) and Coleman Williams (Williams, Meriwether, Smith and Co) to "save" Mooey. He will continue to greet library visitors due to their generosity. John announced that with the new circulation/catalog software the library's collection is now available on-line. UML will sponsor a blood drive the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. The next Board meeting will be held in November.
