HomeMy WebLinkAbout05-09-2000 Library Board MinutesMay 9, 2000 4 pm Unger Memorial Library Advisory Board met in the basement of the Library with the following in attendance: Board members David Isaacson, Maisie. Jones and Joy Denton ; Friends of UML President Minnie Ruth Rigler and Librarian John Sigwald. John welcomed everyone and showed them the new tabletop lectern and base that the Friends of UML recently purchased for the Library. John attended Texas Library Association Annual Conference in Houston in April. He is still involved with the Texas Bluebonnet Award committee and was host for one the children chosen to attend the TBA luncheon. He was host to a 5th grader from Lubbock. He is now going to be on the Summer Reading Club artist selection committee for the next few years. John explained that UML has recently received a $29,985. TIF grant. This was a non-competitive grant. The purpose of these grants is to improve Internet access in public libraries. We will use this money to purchase additional computers and a new automated circulation/ catalog that will allow us to make our holdings available online. In future years, UML can apply for additional TIF grants with $100,000. maximum. UML has also just received a Bill and Melissa Gates Foundation grant.that will furnish UML with 4 regular computers and 1 server (one of the regular computers will be a spanish language version). These should arrive in August or September, 2000. This grant will also provide one laser printer. Each of the computers will have Microsoft Word and other Microsoft programs. The goal of the Gates Foundation is to make sure everyone has access to digital technology through public libraries. This was also a non-competitive grant and is worth approx. $20,000. John is working with an Eagle Scout for a possible project and possibly may try to use scouts to help with training patrons in various programs. Debby Gibson has resigned as Literacy Coordinator. She is taking the position of Coordinator at RSVP locally. John will be working with Debby and Hope English in filling this position. UBS Blood Drive will be held at UML on Friday, May 26th from 9-6. Summer Reading Club will be held at UML each day during the month of June. There will be two groups--Read-to-Me for 4 years through just finished kindergarten and Summer Reading Club for those who have just finished first grade and up. Friends of UML are furnishing t -shirts for participants. John applied for and received a grant sponsored by Cargill and American Library Assn. "Go Figure" is a 6 -weeks hands-on math display for ages 2-7. This display will be in UML juvenile section during April 2001. John and Rainer will be attending a workshop in St. Paul during June 2000 regarding this display. Expenses for both will be paid by the grant with the exception of Rainer's airfare that John is paying for. UML is participating in the Plainview Cattle Drive. "Mooey" is very popular and has already brought many people into the library. "Meet Your Cow" will be held at UML on Thursday, June 1 at 5 pm. Next meeting for Board is scheduled for September 2000.
