HomeMy WebLinkAbout09-14-1999 Library Board MinutesSeptember 14, 1999 4 pm Unger Memorial Library Advisory Board met in the basement of the Library with the following in attendance: Board members Geoff Wells, Maisie Jones, Barbara Green and Caroline Kopp ; Hi -Plains Genealogy Society president Mary Ann McWilliams; and Librarian John Sigwald. John told the Board that this school year he is reading to all 4th graders at Highland Elementary --going on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings each week. John told of going to ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans in June 1999. He was able to hear a number of interesting speakers. He is now secretary of Library of Congress cataloging and publication committee. Budget information is not available yet. It will be discussed at next (November) meeting. John explained that he is representing the Library regarding a TIF (Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund) community grant application. These are federal funds for internet computers,cable lines, etc. for libraries. The community grant must include public schools (PISD) public library (Unger Library), non-profit hospital (MHMR and SPHO) and higher education (Wayland Baptist University). This application will be for a $500,000. grant. Gene Whitfill of PISD is presently applying for a $20,000. planning grant (due 10/01). These grants are contingent on 10% matching funds. In the case of the $20,000. grant, Unger's part would be $400. In the case of the $500,000. grant Unger's matching funds would be $10,000. which would have to be approved by the City Council. Caroline Kopp asked why South Plains Health Provider and not Covenant Hospital. John said he would check on this. John announced that he has been appointed to serve on the TexShare ( part of Texas State Library --consortium which provides reduced cost databases for libraries) Board. Public libraries have only included since September 1, 1999. John will give more information when he knows more. Next board meeting is scheduled for 2nd Tuesday of November 1999 Meeting was adjourned. After the meeting, John Sigwald spoke with Barbara Green, Maisie Jones and Geoff Wells. Each of their terms on the UML Advisory Board expires 1/1/2000. Both Barbara and Maisie indicated they would like to serve a second term. Geoff (who has served for over 10 years) stated he would not mind to be replaced on the Board.
