HomeMy WebLinkAbout03-09-1999 Library Board MinutesMarch 9, 1999 4 pm Unger Memorial Library Advisory Board met in the basement of the Library with the following in attendance: Board members Geoff Wells, Maisie Jones and David Isaacsen; Friends of UML Co -Presidents Phil and Nancy Cox; WTLS lay representative Lucile Davis; Hi -Plains Genealogical Society president Mary Ann McWilliams; Director of Community Development for the City of Plainview John Castro; and Librarian John Sigwald. John Sigwald read excerpts from an editorial in a recent American Libraries magazine regarding "Will there be a need for libraries in the technological age?" He indicated that the contents of books are not available electronically. Everyone present agreed that libraries will always serve a need in society. John Sigwald attended ALA Midwinter Conference in Philadelphia in late January. 7-8000 people attend this conference and it is primarily committee meetings. John is presently on the Library of Congress Cataloging committee and is looking into others that he would like to serve on. He won a cold laminating machine in a contest/drawing. Texas Library Association Annual Conference will be held in Dallas April 21-23. John Sigwald, Karen Trudeau and Carol Smith will be attending this year. Laura Bush will be one of the keynote speakers. John urged all present to attend if possible. Friends of UML will hold the annual meeting on Tuesday, March 23rd at 7 pm. New officers will be elected. Minnie Ruth Rigler has accepted the position of President for the coming term. Friends Book Sale setup will be on Wednesday, March 24th. The Annual Book Sale will be held on Friday, March 26th from 2-6pm and on Saturday, March 27th from 9-4. John is still trying to find a group for the cleanup after the sale. One group has shown interest, but has not definitely said they will do this. John Sigwald is the chairman of the Technology Committee for the City of Plainview. He is checking for computer Y2K problems. He feels that the Library should have no problems, but is going to as the City for $20,000 as a safety net (just in case) when he prepares the next FY budget (This goes to John Castro next week and will then work its way through channels until budget time next fall.) John Sigwald discussed haveing Library Advisory Board meetings quarterly (Skipping summer meeting) with additional called meetings if necessary. Maisie Jones made the motion that quarterly meetings be held. David Isaacsen seconded the motion. All were in favor and the motion passed. All agreed to skip the summer meeting and also to have called meetings if John deems them necessary. John indicated that he will be working on a policy regarding children being picked up after programs at the Library. Meeting was adjourned.
