Unger Memorial Library Advisory Board met in the basement of
the Library withe the following in attendance:
Board members David Isaacsen, Maisie Jones and Caroline
Kopp; Friends of UML president Phil Cox; and Librarian John Slgwald.
John told everyone he will be attending ALA Midwinter
Conference in Philadelphia on January 29 -February 1.
He is on a Library of Congress committee. He said
ALA Summer conference will be held in New Orleans this
year with Colin Powell as the keynote speaker.
John said he is planning to apply for another Texas
Book Festival grant this year. He is checking if
the committee will give to the same library
for two consecutive years. He will ask for funds
for developing a Spanish book collection for UML.
John had attached articles to the Board members letters
and some discussion followed about those. John stated
we have had no problems with the Internet and do have
a policy. David Isaacsen said he feels "Don't make changes
unless problems occur or complaints are made". Others present
agreed. John explained that if any problems arise with regard
to children and the Internet, we have two options: set up
a separate children's terminal or have a parental permission
slip that would have to be signed before minors could use
the Internet. Thus far, no problems and UML will maintain
status quo.
John also sent everyone an article about a teacher's
problems after using an ethnic book in her classroom. He
stated that we all need to support teachers and school
librarians.
John told those present we are still trying to get the
inside front door working properly with the electric
opener.
Meeting was adjourned.
