HomeMy WebLinkAbout07-02-1984 Library Board MinutesDIRECTOR'S REPORT ON LIBRARY ACTIVITIES 7/2/84 Rob Strong has taken a postiion as librarian of Mary Hardin Baylor College in Belton. I personally would like to wish him the best of luck and thank him for his support in the short time I've known him. We will, of course, need to replace him on the library board. I wrote a series of articles on the library for the Herald for National Library Week in April. We also had a fine -free week that week --quite a few books were returned, but only a few were "way overdues", which was really the point of the project. Publicity for fine -free week wasn't as great as I had hoped, so $" ybe next time (next year?) will be different. The suer reading program is well underway --actually will be completed June 29 except for a final program for participants in July. We had 164 persons (mostly elementary school age) register for the program,"contracting" to read a certain number of books during the specified time period and trying to reach their goal. We have also had a suer film program (not exclusively for reading club participants) which will continue until August. Our average attendance at these films has been over 100. We now have a new juvenile card catalog, courtesy of the Plainview Junior Service League. As soon as we get an invoice we will get a picture in the paper. This was a very generous gift (about $1300). The old card catalog will be used for the shelf list in the book processing area. In the next month or so I plan to start a new bi-weekly column in the newspaper, "From hte Library Shelves". This column will review books in the Unger Library collection. I have a few reviewers lined up; we will finalize procedures, format, etc., in a couple of weeks. The 1984-85 budget has been submitted to the city manager (?) for approval. The overall total is the same as the current year's budget. The salary figures have been increased by 21% with other line items adjusted down.
