HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes 02.25.2016 • Building Trades & Fire Code Board of Appeals Minutes February 25, 2016 BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT: Ron Roberts, Henry Trevino, Junior Rodriguez, Jeremy Searsy, Manuel Gonzales and Ralph Langley. Members Not Present: Ricky Mason. STAFF MEMBERS PRESENT: Cris Valverde - Community Development Director, Larry Hunter — City Inspector, Robert Zapata — City Inspector and Judy Rasher- Secretary. GUESTS PRESENT: None. FIRST ITEM ON THE AGENDA: Oath of Office — Ralph Langley and Henry Trevino. SECOND ITEM ON THE AGENDA: Approval of January 21, 2016 Minutes. Motion to approve minutes as presented was made by Ron Roberts, and seconded by Ralph Langley. Motion carried unanimously. THIRD ITEM ON THE AGENDA: Elect new chairman. Motion to elect Ron Roberts was made by Manuel Gonzales and second by Jeremy Searsy. Motion carried unanimously. FOURTH ITEM ON THE AGENDA: Discussion regarding adopting the 2015 Edition of the International Building Code (No action to be taken). Mr. Valverde stated that these are merely a summary of the significant changes and do not include every single change proposed. Whereas, changes such as rewording, punctuation, and other minor format changes do not affect the regulation of buildings. Mr. Valverde also stated that the staff set up meetings with various representatives of local construction trades (plumber, electricians, roofers, etc) and that a minimum of two meetings where scheduled with each. Mr. Valverde presented to the board a summary of significant changes related to the upcoming adoption of the 2015 International Building Codes: Chapters 1 through 6 of the International Building Code is to be focused on for this particular meeting. Mr. Valverde stated that additional Chapters will be discussed in subsequent meetings. Board Member Langley asked if the proposed codes would affect new or existing businesses once adopted. Mr. Valverde stated that both existing and new businesses are regulated by the current Building Codes and depending on the scope of work proposed, the type of regulations to be enforced will be determined. Board Member Rodriguez then asked if participation by the local construction trades were well attended. Mr. Valverde stated that although three to four members of each trade were invited to the meetings, on average two members attended. Mr. Rodriquez then asked if staff received any negative feedback from during these trade group meetings. Mr. Valverde stated that there was good dialogue but no negative complaints were received.
