HomeMy WebLinkAboutLibrary Board Minutes 02-14-2017 Library Board Meeting February 14, 2017 Present at the Library Board meeting were Board members Leticia Gaucin, Debbie Gallaway, Kenna Hatch, and Stephanie James. Also present was Andrew Freeman, Assistant City Manager. Librarian, Mariya Hapiy, opened the meeting with a review of ongoing projects: 1. About 100 (one hundred) Usborne books were donated by a group of people interested in helping to provide more juvenile books for the library’s patrons to enjoy. The donated funds were used by the group to purchase books through the Educational Development Corporation which supports educational funding on the local level through its Literacy for a Lifetime 50 percent matching grant program. The donation group was headed by one of the library’s patrons whose children participate in Story Time at the library. She is also involved in other community activities. An article in the [[959,1004,1243,1055][10][,I,][Calibri]]Plainview Herald [[1242,1004,1252,1055][10][,,][Calibri]] [[1252,1004,2246,1055][10][,,][Calibri]](Wednesday, February 8, 2017) spotlighted this donation. Hapiy stated that after reading the article, others have voiced an interest in being involved in any such projects in the future. 2. Unger Memorial Library received the Plainview Area Endowment Grant requested in order to start a teen Manga Club. The grant of $900 (nine hundred dollars) will be used to purchase about five sets of Manga books (graphic novels) and art supplies. Hapiy has been in contact with personnel at the high school to get a broad spectrum of what is needed to get this group started and how to incorporate an artistic avenue into the program. More details should be available in March. 3. The library conducted its first winter book sale in January, selling paperbacks and the fiction books available on the shelves. Some members of the Friends of the Unger Memorial Library wanted to try having other book sales in addition to the Fall Book Sale in October and the regular annual Spring Book Sale in March. The public has been very generous with donations and this was one way to alleviate an overabundance of materials for the upcoming book sale in March. The sale was successful and received positive feedback. thth The annual book sale in March is scheduled for Friday the 24 with membership fees, and Saturday the 25 which th is open to the general public. It is expected that the $1 per Bag sale will be on Monday the 27 as usual. The Friends of the Unger Memorial Library will have its annual meeting in March. Hapiy related to those present that Wesley Cook from the Central Plains Center (Plainview) had expressed an interest in connecting veterans of the area with the community. He asked if the library would host an open dialog meeting to provide the veterans an opportunity to relay their experiences and the realities of serving in the armed military. One target group mentioned was high school students interested in joining the armed services. The Texas State Library supports such initiatives by providing fifteen copies of one title which is related to this topic. The title selected by Unger Library was [[966,2291,1456,2342][10][,I,][Calibri]]What It Is Like To Go To War [[1456,2291,1738,2342][10][,,][Calibri]]by Karl Marlante [[1738,2291,1782,2342][10][,,][C alibri]]s. [[1782,2291,1807,2342][10][,,][Calibri]] Hapiy stated that the Library’s website would soon be in conjunction with the City’s. The library’s page would follow the same format as what the City already has established. Coming soon also on the web page will be a calendar of Unger Library events to which the public can subscribe in order to receive notifications of updates placed on the calendar. Also available on the website soon will be the library‘s updated Policies and Procedures. Unger Library soon expects to have the ability to send email notifications to remind patrons a few days ahead of time when the materials checked out on their accounts are due. They are already able to renew materials online as long as the materials have not been renewed on a prior occasion, are not on hold for another patron, or are not overdue. Those present were informed that the library, along with the City’s IT department, are getting new computers installed. The first to be done was the one in the Librarian’s office, and the second one is the one used by the Administrative Assistant. The next part of the project is to get the ones replaced at the front circulation desk, then the fifteen public computers. The next Library Board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 9, 2017, at 4:00pm in the basement of the library. Dismissal was at 4:25pm.
