Main Street Board Meeting
Minutes
03-05-2018
The Main Street Coordinating Board met on Monday, March 5, 2018 at noon in the Fair Theater.
Members attending the meeting were Jay Givens, Ranada Jack, Andrea Glenn, Cynthia Gregory, Kelly
Alison, Tonya Keesee, Dora Sanchez, Diane Book, Tori Huddleston, Melinda Brown and Phyllis Wall.
Members not present were Mitesh Patel and Logan Pritchett
Belinda Hinojosa led Dora Sanchez in Oath of Office.
Ranada called the meeting to order at 12:11 P.M. Andrea seconded the move and the motion carried
unanimously.
Ranada brought up Item 4, the Property Ownership Relationship Project of which some 70
to 80 business may be involved. She ask Tori to look into the list of properties and the board
discussed whether it would be better for members to pick the business they would like to
build personal relationships with or if they would rather those relationships be appointed.
The board decided it would be simpler if businesses were appointed to each member.
Tonya, referencing the old Marse & Sons building, now owned by Heather and Justin May, talked about
how that store front could be improved and Kelly said she
Kelly suggested that board members, when reaching out, make those business aware of the signage and
façade grants available through Main Street and suggested we also make them aware of that application
process. Dora suggested that we find out what we can offer, what we can do to help these area business,
There was no other discussion and Ranada said she would get a list of businesses for each of us to form
a personal relationship with and she would send that list out through email.
Melinda went over the section of the By-Laws where it sets term limits of Board Members.
She noted that our choices were to keep the By-Laws as is or to change them to no term
limits. Ranada went over some of the pros and cons, including the difficulty of getting rid of
someone who was no longer viable, Melinda mentioned that if a member missed three
meetings in a row they would not remain board members and Kelly and Tonya both added
that people burn out and that enthusiastic members are really important. Kelly motioned that
the By-Laws remain as is and Tonya seconded the motion which carried unanimously.
Hot Grants
Hale on Wheels requested $750 for promoting their September 15, 2018 event. Ranada said
that the application mentioned that attending would be approx. 150 to 200 and would fill 5 to
10 hotel rooms. Kelly ask who benefits financially, Cynthia mentioned that the Rotary helps
with this event and that it had grown every year. Kelly ask why so few hotel rooms would be
needed when attending would be 150 to 200. There was some discussion about encouraging
Ranada said that the board had supported them in the past. Jay said he would like to know
more about who benefited financially and about the hotel rooms and ask if there was a rush
to decide since the event was not until September. Ranada suggested we ask the Hale on
Wheels representative to attennya agreed and motioned to
table the matter until April. Dora seconded, and the motion carried unanimously.
Façade Grants
The Radiant Lily submitted for approval of a $500 Façade Incentive Grant for a "hand
painted, on the building" sign. Kelly mentioned that aesthetically it was a good plan. Tonya
motioned that we approve the grant, Kelly seconded it and the motion carried unanimously.
Upcoming Events
Ranada talked about the Spring Break Movies and made sure we were aware of the flyers on
the table. She asks Tori if she needed help with the 10am to 2pm events, Melinda mentioned
that they could always use some help. Tonya volunteered.
Melinda brought up the April 6 Roundtable at 8th and Austin at the Connection Point that will
include 2 sessions of speakers, including lunch and a downtown tour.
April 23rd will be a Ground Breaking for the Business Park.
Tonya mentioned that Emily Jones will be in Plainview April 17th at College Hill at a book
signing. Jones, a onetime Plainview resident has served as a Fox Sport Broadcaster, SW
Ranada briefly mentioned plans to implement a Second Saturdays and Phyllis filled in the
Second Saturdays: Out on the Downtown had a few
examples to show of logo and banner possibilities. Andrea ask how she could make sure she
got one.
Andrea reported that she had visited Hello Baby, the Broadway Brew, Goodwill and
Broadway Treasures.
Kelly mentioned CAMP's Exhibition Opening March 16 from 6-9pm, free and open to all. She
also said there would be a Skateboard Contest at the Plainview Skateboard Park and Film
screening the next day at CAMP on March 17.
Ranada adjourned the meeting at 12:51
