A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF PLAINVIEW, TEXAS EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR
PROPOSITION 19 WHICH WOULD PROVIDE BONDS FOR
THE SUPERCONDUCTING SUPER COLLIDER.
WHEREAS, the SuperConducting Super Collider (SSC) is an
underground ring of ten thousand super-cooled magnets capable of
accelerating beams of protons to nearly the speed of light through
a 53-mile circumference race-track shaped tunnel that is ten fee=
across; and
WHEREAS, the SSC will help Scientist understand the nature of
matter and energy and the origin of the Universe; and
WHEREAS, the SSC will keep the U.S. the World's leader in
basic science into the nexu century and lead to new jobs and
industries through discoveries and spinoffs; and
WHEREAS, twenty four other Staues want the SSC including the
great State of Texas; and
WHEREAS, the SSC Project would create 4,500 construction
jobs and once operational, it will employ 2,500 Scientists,
Researchers and Support Personnel, and 500 to 1,000 Scientist who
will visit annually to conduct experiments with an annual
estimated budget of $270,000,000.00 a year which will attract
high-teChjobs; and companies to the State, providing an additional 14,500
WHEREAS, it is the largest government research program
scheduled for the rest of this century, making Texas a World
Center for basic scientific research and its presence will improve
the Texas Education System by bringing Scientist to work
and teach here; and , study
WHEREAS, for every $1.00 in taxes Texans send to Washington,
Texas gets just $.63 in return; and
WHEREAS, for every $1.00 that Texas puts up for the SSC
Project, the Federal Government matches it with $12.00; and
WHRREAS, Proposition 19 on the November ballot calls for the
approval of $500 million in General Obligation Bonds if and only
if Texas is selected for the SSC with the money being spent for
land, utilities, roads, buildings and other improvements; and
WHEREAS, the approval of Proposition 19 by the Electric will
tell the Federal Government that Texans are 100% behind this
Project; and
WHEREAS, Proposition 19 is critical to the State of Texas in
securing the SSC; and
WHEREAS, if Texas is successful in its efforts to secure the
SSC, especially at the Amarillo site, the citizens of Plainview
will receive a direct and substantial benefit.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the
City of Plainview, Texas that the City of Plainview hereby
endorses the Proposition 19 Proposal and encourages all the
citizens of Plainview and Hale County to support such.
I, James p. Jeffers, City Manager for the City of Plainview,
hereby certify that the above Resolution was adopted by the
Plainview City Council on this the 13th day of October, 1987.
