A RESOLUTION OF ~ CITY COUNCIL OF ~tE CITY OF
PLAINVIEW AUTHORIZING THE CITY TO JOIN WITH OTHER
TEXAS CITIES IN A CONSOLIDATED EFFORT TO OPPOSE
s~TE-BN BRI.L T!~_ .RPHONE RATE INCREASE AND AUTHORIZE
A PAYMENT OF 3.5¢ PER CAPITA AS THE CITY'S PORTION
OF THE COST.
WHEREAS, on June 21, 1982, Southwestern Bell Telephone Company
filed for another rate increase to the Public Utility Conmzission re-
questing an additional $471,000,000 per year increase not with-standing
just having received a $243.7 million in October of 1981; and
WHEREAS, the bulk of this rate increase request is on the local
exchange custcmers, both business and residential, where Southwestern
Bell Telephone has very little competition and the request is not in
areas where conpetition exists: and
WHEREAS, the cities of the State of Texas serve by Southwestern
Bell Telephone are joining together again in a consolidated effort to
oppose this rate increase before the Texas Public Utilities Commission
and have established a participating cost of 3.5¢ per capita based on
the 1980 census, which amounts to $776.55 for Plainview's portion of the
cost:
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY the Mayor and City Council of the
City of Plainview, Texas that this city join with other Texas Cities in
opposing the rate increase proposed by Southwestern Bell Telephone and
that $776.55 be appropriated and sent to the Texas Municipal League as
Plainview's portion of the cost.
